Gutter Repair: Can Your Gutters Be Fixed?
Most gutter problems are fixable: a gutter that sags can be re-hung and re-pitched, a leaking seam can be resealed, and a loose downspout can be refastened. Here's how to tell when a repair is enough and when it's time for new gutters.

Can sagging or leaking gutters be repaired?
Yes, most sagging or leaking gutters can be repaired by re-hanging them on new hidden hangers, re-pitching them toward the downspout and resealing the seams and corners. Replacement makes more sense when the gutters are rusted through, split, badly bent, too small for the roof, or when the fascia board behind them has rotted along a long stretch.
Repair or replace?
| Problem | Usually a repair | Usually a replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Sagging | A few loose spikes or hangers | Gutter is bent or kinked along the run |
| Leaking | Drips at a seam, corner or end cap | Rust holes or splits in the gutter itself |
| Overflowing | Clog or wrong pitch | Gutter is too small for the roof |
| Pulling away | Hangers backed out of good wood | Fascia rotted along a long stretch |
| Downspout | Loose straps or a disconnected elbow | Crushed or undersized downspouts |
How we repair gutters
Find the cause
We check the hangers, pitch, seams, downspouts and the wood behind the gutter.
Fix the wood first
Soft or rotted fascia is replaced so the gutter has something solid to hold on to.
Re-hang and re-pitch
Hidden hangers about every 2 feet, with the gutter sloped toward the downspout.
Seal and test
Seams and corners resealed, then we run water through to check the flow.
What you can check yourself
- From the ground, look for a gutter that dips in the middle or tilts away from the house.
- During rain, watch where water spills: one spot usually means a clog or low point.
- Look for peeling paint or dark stains on the fascia board behind the gutter.
- Make sure downspouts are connected and drain at least a few feet away from the foundation.
Please stay off tall ladders, especially near the roof edge. We're glad to look for you. Why gutters pull away from the house β
Why gutters fail faster in New Jersey
North Jersey roofs and gutters take a beating: freeze-thaw cycles all winter, nor'easters with wind-driven rain, heavy wet snow, ice dams, and summer thunderstorms that drop an inch of rain in an hour. Each freeze pushes on the hangers and seams. Ice in a clogged gutter can weigh hundreds of pounds per section. That's why the same gutter can be fine for years and then sag after one bad winter.
Most repairs we do fall into three groups: hangers that let go, seams and corners that leak, and wood behind the gutter that rotted. The first two are quick fixes. The third needs carpentry first, or the repair won't hold.

Questions homeowners ask
Why is my gutter sagging?
Usually the spikes or hangers have backed out, the hangers are too far apart, the gutter is holding heavy debris or ice, or the wood behind it has rotted.
Can a leaking gutter seam be fixed?
Yes. The old sealant is cleaned out and the seam is resealed with gutter sealant. If the metal around the seam is rusted through, that section is replaced.
What causes gutters to pull away from the house?
Fasteners that loosen over time, rotted fascia, heavy clogs and ice. Re-hanging with hidden hangers into solid wood fixes it.
Is it worth repairing old gutters?
If the gutter itself is in good shape and the right size, a repair is usually worth it. If it's rusted, split or undersized, new seamless gutters last longer.
Do you fix the wood behind the gutter?
Yes. As a roofing company we replace rotted fascia and drip edge before re-hanging the gutter.
How much does gutter repair cost?
It depends on what's wrong, the height and whether wood needs replacing. We give you a free estimate before any work starts.
Can one section of gutter be replaced?
Yes. A damaged section can be replaced and joined to the rest, or a full run can be replaced as one seamless piece.
Why do my gutters leak only in heavy rain?
Usually the gutter is too small, the pitch is off or a downspout is partly clogged, so water rises over a seam.
Are gutter repairs worth it on old gutters?
If the metal is solid and the size is right, yes. Rusted steel or badly bent gutters are better replaced.
Do you repair gutters after storms?
Yes, including gutters damaged by falling branches and ice.
