Can damaged siding be repaired instead of replaced?
Yes, damaged siding can usually be repaired when the damage is limited to a few panels or one wall: cracked, loose or blown-off pieces are removed and replaced and the wall underneath is checked for water damage. Replacement makes more sense when the damage is spread across the house, the siding is warped or brittle with age, or matching panels are no longer made.
Repair or replace?
| What you see | Usually a repair | Usually a replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Cracks or holes | A few panels | Many panels on several walls |
| Loose or blown-off pieces | After one storm | Keeps happening every storm |
| Warping or buckling | One spot near a heat source | Waves across whole walls |
| Fading | Not a repair issue | When the color is uneven and you want a new look |
| Soft or rotted wall behind | Small area | Large areas of water damage |
Why matching matters
Vinyl siding fades with the sun, and colors and profiles get discontinued. New panels on an old wall can look different. When an exact match isn't available, a common solution is to move panels from a less visible wall to the front and put the new ones in back. We'll tell you before any work how close the match will be.
What we check behind the siding
Sheathing
Soft or stained wood means water has been getting in.
House wrap
Torn or missing wrap lets water reach the wall.
Window and door flashing
The most common place water gets behind siding.
Roof-to-wall flashing
Missing kickout flashing sends roof water into the wall.

Questions homeowners ask
Can you replace just one piece of siding?
Yes. Vinyl and fiber cement panels can be removed and replaced one at a time.
Will new siding panels match my old siding?
Sometimes exactly, sometimes not, because colors fade and styles change. We tell you before work starts how close the match will be.
Does homeowners insurance cover siding damage?
Storm and wind damage is often covered, depending on your policy. Wear, fading and age are not. We can document storm damage for your claim.
What causes siding to come loose?
Wind, nails driven too tight or too loose, and siding that was installed without room to expand and contract.
Is damaged siding a big problem?
It can be. Gaps let water into the wall, which leads to rot and mold you can't see from outside.
Do you repair all types of siding?
We work with vinyl, wood and fiber cement siding.
