How to Find a Roof Leak
The stain on the ceiling is rarely right under the hole in the roof. Water travels along the wood first. Here's how roofers trace it.

How do you find where a roof leak is coming from?
To find a roof leak, go into the attic above the stain with a flashlight, look for wet wood, stains or mold on the underside of the roof, and follow the trail uphill, because water runs down rafters and roof boards before it drips. Then look at what sits on the roof above that spot: a vent, pipe boot, chimney, skylight, valley or missing shingles. If the attic is dry and the stain appears on cold, dry days, it may be condensation.
Step by step
Measure from the stain
Measure from an outside wall to the stain so you can find the spot in the attic.
Search the attic
Flashlight on the underside of the roof deck: dark stains, wet wood, mold.
Follow the trail uphill
Water runs along rafters and boards. The source is higher than the drip.
Look for nails and light
Shiny wet nail tips or daylight show where water gets in.
Match it outside
From the ground or with binoculars, look at what's above that spot.
Rule out condensation
Frost on nails or damp wood everywhere points to ventilation. Leak or condensation? →
Stay safe
Walk only on the attic joists, never on the drywall between them. Don't go on the roof when it's wet, icy or steep. A water hose test (one person in the attic, one spraying sections of the roof) works, but it's a job for a roofer on a pitched roof.
Where to look, by room
| Where the stain is | Check above it for |
|---|---|
| Bathroom ceiling | Plumbing vent pipe boot, bath fan vent |
| Near the chimney | Step and counter flashing, chimney crown |
| Top-floor bedroom corner | Valley or dormer side wall |
| Along an outside wall | Ice dam, gutter backup, roof edge |
| Middle of a ceiling | Missing shingles, nail pops, skylight |

Questions homeowners ask
Why is the ceiling stain far from the leak?
Water lands on the roof boards or rafters and runs downhill before it drips onto the ceiling.
What if I can't see anything in the attic?
The leak may be over a finished ceiling or a low area you can't reach, or it may be condensation. A roofer can check from both sides.
Can a roofer find a leak in the rain?
Seeing it active helps. We often trace leaks in the attic during rain and fix the roof once it's dry.
Is a water hose test safe for my roof?
Yes when done section by section, starting low and working up. It's safest done by a roofer.
What are the most common leak spots?
Flashing, pipe boots, valleys, skylights and missing shingles. Common causes →
Do you charge to find a leak?
Call us at 973-200-1617. We'll explain the inspection and give you the price for the repair before any work.
Can a leak travel far from where it starts?
Yes, several feet along rafters and roof boards.
Why is my ceiling wet only sometimes?
Wind direction, rain intensity, ice or condensation can all be the reason.
Is it safe to do a hose test myself?
Only from the ground on low roofs. Climbing a wet roof is dangerous.
Can you find leaks in finished attics?
Yes, though it may take more steps.
