What does fascia board repair in Paramus involve?
Fascia board repair means removing the rotted or broken section of the board that runs along the roof edge, fixing whatever got wet behind it, and installing new trim so the gutter has something solid to hang on. The fascia is the vertical board at the end of the rafters; the soffit is the flat panel underneath the overhang that closes it in and usually lets air into the attic.
Those two pieces do more than look neat. The fascia carries the full weight of your gutters, often full of water, leaves or ice. The soffit keeps birds, squirrels and weather out of the roof overhang, and its vents are the intake half of your attic ventilation. When either one fails, the problem tends to spread: a soft fascia lets gutters sag, sagging gutters overflow, and the overflow rots more wood.
Paramus has a lot of postwar ranches, split-levels, capes and colonials, many with original wood trim that has been painted many times over. On those houses we often find the visible fascia is only part of the story, and the rafter tails or the edge of the roof deck behind it are soft too. That's why we always look from a ladder and, where it helps, from the attic before we write the price.
How do you know your fascia or soffit needs repair?
You can usually spot fascia and soffit trouble from the driveway. Look for these:
Peeling paint and dark stains
Paint that blisters or peels on the fascia every year means water is getting into the wood from behind, usually from the gutter or roof edge.
Gutters sagging or pulling away
Gutter hangers can't hold in soft wood. A gap between gutter and board is a classic sign of rotten fascia. See gutters pulling away.
Holes or gaps in the soffit
Chewed openings, loose vinyl panels or missing pieces let animals and wind-driven rain into the overhang.
Water stains under the overhang
Brown stains or drips on the soffit mean water is running behind the gutter or coming through the roof edge.
Moss, mildew or soft spots
Push gently with a screwdriver: if it sinks into the wood, the board is rotting.
Icicles behind the gutter
Ice forming between the gutter and the house points to ice dams and water getting behind the fascia.
One sign on its own may be a small repair. Two or three together usually mean the board needs replacing and the gutter or roof edge needs attention too.
Why do fascia boards rot on Paramus homes?
Fascia boards almost always rot because water keeps reaching the back of the wood, not because the wood is old. The usual causes we find in Paramus and nearby Bergen County towns:
- Overflowing or clogged gutters. Paramus has plenty of mature shade trees. Leaves fill gutters, water spills over the back edge and soaks the fascia. See fascia repair behind gutters.
- Missing or short drip edge. Without drip edge flashing at the roof edge, water rolls off the shingles and wicks back onto the top of the fascia instead of dropping into the gutter.
- Ice dams. In winter, meltwater refreezes at the cold eave, backs up under the shingles and runs down behind the gutter.
- Roof leaks at the eave. A failing first course of shingles or a worn starter strip lets water into the deck edge, which then soaks into the fascia from above.
- Bare wood and failed caulk. Once paint and caulk fail at miter joints, rain gets straight into the end grain.
If the rot keeps coming back in the same spot, or there are stains inside but nothing obvious outside, the leak may be hidden. For those cases we offer a thermal (infrared) roof scan β a separate paid service, priced up front β that uses a thermal camera to help find hidden or recurring leaks and wet insulation before anything is opened up.
Fascia repair or fascia board installation: which do you need?
Whether we repair a section or install new fascia along the whole run depends on how far the damage goes:
| Situation | What we usually recommend | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One soft section, rest of board solid | Cut out and replace that section | No reason to replace sound wood; we scarf the joint so it sheds water |
| Rot at several spots along one side | Replace the full run on that side | Patches every few feet leave seams that fail again |
| Rafter tails or deck edge soft too | Repair the framing, then new fascia | New trim nailed to rotten wood won't hold a gutter |
| Gutters being replaced anyway | Replace fascia at the same time | The gutters are already off, so the trim is fully exposed. See replacing fascia with gutters |
| Soffit panels loose or chewed, wood behind sound | Repair or replace soffit panels | Close the opening and restore the intake vents |
| Roof is near the end of its life | Plan fascia and drip edge with the roof replacement | Edge flashing and trim go in together and tie into each other |
We'll show you photos of what we find so you can see why we're recommending a section repair or a full run. More detail: rotten fascia board replacement.
What materials are used for new fascia and soffit?
New fascia is usually wood, PVC/composite trim board, or wood covered with an aluminum wrap; soffits are usually vented vinyl or aluminum panels, or wood on older homes. Each choice trades off cost, upkeep and appearance:
- Wood fascia matches older trim and can be painted any color, but it needs paint and caulk kept up or it will rot again.
- PVC or composite trim doesn't rot and holds paint well; it costs more than wood and expands and contracts more with temperature, so it needs the right fasteners and joints.
- Aluminum wrap over wood gives a low-maintenance finish, but only if the wood underneath is sound and dry. Wrapping over rot just hides it.
- Vented soffit panels let air into the attic. If your soffit is solid, adding vented panels is often part of fixing poor attic ventilation.
We'll go over what fits your house and budget at the inspection, and the material is written on your estimate.
How we repair fascia and soffit, step by step
Inspect and photograph
Ladder check of the fascia, soffit, gutters and roof edge, plus the attic if we can get in, so the price covers the real damage.
Take down the gutter where needed
Gutters come off the damaged section so the fascia can be removed cleanly and the hangers reset into solid wood.
Remove rot and check the framing
Rotted fascia comes out; rafter tails, sub-fascia and the edge of the roof deck are checked and repaired if soft.
Install new fascia and soffit
New boards are fastened, joints sealed and primed or wrapped; soffit panels and vents go back in.
Fix the cause
Drip edge, gutter pitch, downspouts, or the roof edge leak, so the new trim stays dry.
Clean up and walk through
Debris cleared and nails picked up with a magnet; we walk the work with you and show you the before and after photos.
What does fascia repair cost in Paramus?
The cost of fascia and soffit repair in Paramus depends on how many linear feet are damaged and what's behind the board, so we give you an exact written price after a free inspection rather than a guess over the phone. What moves the price:
- Length of the damage β a few feet at one corner versus the whole front of the house.
- Hidden damage β soft rafter tails, sub-fascia or roof deck edge add work. Rotted decking and hidden damage are extra and shown on your photos.
- Height and access β a one-story ranch is quicker than a two-story colonial over a deck or landscaping.
- Material β wood, PVC/composite or aluminum wrap, and whether soffit panels are replaced too.
- Gutters β whether existing gutters can be rehung or should be replaced.
- Roof edge repairs β if a roof leak at the eave caused the rot, that's priced as a roof repair: roof leak repair starts from $650 and standard roof repair from $950.

Paramus Fascia & Soffit Questions
Do you do fascia board repair in Paramus, NJ?
Yes. We repair and replace fascia boards and soffits in Paramus and across Bergen County. The inspection and written estimate are free.
How much does fascia repair cost in Paramus?
It depends on how many feet are damaged, what's rotted behind the board, the height of the house and the material. We give you the exact price in writing after a free inspection.
How long does fascia repair take?
Most fascia and soffit repairs are done in a day. Larger jobs with framing repairs or new gutters can take longer, and we tell you the schedule on the estimate.
Do I need to be home?
Not for the work itself, as long as we can reach the outside of the house. We like to meet you at the inspection and the final walkthrough.
What happens if it rains during the job?
We don't leave an open roof edge exposed. If rain moves in, we cover the work and come back to finish when it's dry.
Can you just wrap the old fascia in aluminum?
Only if the wood underneath is sound and dry. Wrapping rotten wood hides the problem and it keeps rotting, so we replace soft wood first.
Should I replace fascia when I replace my gutters?
If the fascia is soft or stained, yes. The gutters are already off, so it's the easiest time to do it.
Will homeowners insurance pay for fascia damage?
Sometimes, if a storm or fallen limb caused sudden damage; rot from long-term wear usually isn't covered. We can document the damage with photos, but the decision is your insurance company's.
Is financing available?
Financing is available for larger projects. Options and terms depend on the project and approval.
What does the estimate include?
Photos of the damage, what we'll replace, the material, any gutter or roof edge work, and the exact price before any work starts.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Licensed and insured, NJ Lic. #13VH13824700, locally owned in Garfield, NJ.
