What is the difference between soffit and fascia?

Fascia is the vertical board along the roof edge that the gutters attach to; soffit is the panel underneath the roof overhang, and vented soffit lets fresh air into the attic. Rotted fascia lets gutters pull away and water into the roof edge, and damaged or blocked soffit causes attic moisture and lets animals in.

Soffit vents are the intake for attic ventilation. Air comes in low at the soffit and leaves high at the ridge or roof vents. When soffit vents are painted over, blocked by insulation or missing, the attic overheats in summer and holds moisture in winter, which shortens the life of the roof and causes condensation.
